About 1km north of Thornhill, Defiance Wood is 10 acres of land planted by local schoolchildren in 2005 with a mixture of native trees used to build Nelson's Trafalgar fleet, predominantly oak, ash, birch and alder. Defiance Wood is essentially a corridor of new planting linking established woods. It makes a pretty and easy walk of around 5 km, with some lovely views of Thornhill and Tynron Doon. Parking is in nearby Thornhill. There are several (easy to open) gates along the grassy track.
