Southfield Wood is a planted wood after open casting. However, it connects to Brusselton Wood. Brusselton Wood is over 2000 years old and probable that it is wildwood. It contains some of the oldest beech and birch in the north east although it is mainly oak. The oaks range up to around 400 years old mainly as around then a lot were felled for the ship industry and royal navy. The hill next to the wood is called Royal Oak and indicates the crown owned the trees in the middle ages.
