Scarr Wood and Long Wood lay either side of Birdcage Hill and are primarily full of Oak and Birch with some Sycamore and Beech. The oaks in particular are gnarled and twisted due apparently to air pollution in the Calder valley many years ago. There is free on street parking on the surrounding roads and both woods are popular with dog walkers. The paths are wide but unsurfaced and in places steep, there are a few steps in places.
