Mainly a conifer plantation but very well used by local people. The site forms part of the former Great North Forest (GNF) and is located next to Quaking Houses in Co. Durham. Young planted broadleaved woodland adjoins its northern and western sides and to the south lays a large landfill site now reclaimed and planted with mixed woodland. Also to the south lies an extensive area of lowland heath part of which to the southeast (south of Quaking Houses) is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI).
