These small woodlands are three of seven Heritage Woodlands in the Gleadless Valley, which lies only 2 miles south-east of Sheffield city centre. Carr Wood is an ancient woodland first recorded in 1583 and contains the only surviving area of relict coppice in the valley. Hang Bank Wood, lying on a steep slope, is also probably ancient and contains the only mature yew trees in the valley.
