The plantation at Halligarth may not seem like much, but it is in fact the most northerly woodland in Britain. It was planted when the house was built in the 1830s by Dr Edmondson, a keen naturalist, to try to attract more species of bird to the island. The woodland is one of the oldest in Shetland, and is now home to many birds such as pipits and warblers.
