Plas Tan y Bwlch is the Snowdonia National Park Environmental Studies Centre. To the north and north-east of the house lies woodland and an artificial lake; although originally natural, the woodland has had many exotic trees added, and is also traversed by the Ffestiniog railway. Plas Tan y Bwlch occupies a superb position overlooking the valley of the river Dwyryd in the heart of the National Park.
