Hartshorne Wood on Gravelpit Hill is a newly created 32 hectare woodland. Part of the National Forest it offers terrific views south over the village and beyond towards Swadlincote. 2 hectares of the site have been designated for research into discovering which European tree species will best adapt to the predicted climate change in this area. An old sandstone quarry hints at an industrial past. Listen out for larks and watch kestrels over the open spaces. At dusk you may even see a barn owl.
