Forty Horse Wood

Forty Horse Wood has no direct link to horses of the four legged variety. In fact the wood has grown on the spoil heap of the former Forty Horse Colliery, which would have taken its name from the size of the steam engine that drove the pit. The pit, like most of those in the locality, produced not just coal, but also ironstone.
