These hidden woods, once visited by Charles Darwin in the 1870's, comprise ancient oak trees over 300 years old, a massive 15ftgirth beech tree, and flower-sprinkled grasslands. The woods, located just off the North Downs and Pilgrims Ways, is home to many birds such as goldcrest, woodpecker, wren, treecreeper, song thrush and chaffinch. Many mammals also inhabit the Roughs including secretive roe deer and noctule bats.
