These case studies look at the importance of open spaces in woodland as well as their maintenance and creation.
A healthy, natural wood can be a mosaic of areas comprising varying tree cover, structure and species. They might also include watercourses, glades and temporary clearings.
Open spaces are also important for light-specialist species that more shaded areas can’t support – and people enjoy them too!
