Protecting trees and woods
HS2 rail link
HS2 is a grave threat to the UK’s ancient woods and veteran trees, with many at risk of loss or damage. We can’t let this happen.
Almost two hectares of ancient woodland have been saved from a quarry access road near Pontypool in Torfaen.
Following the conclusion of a public inquiry, the planning inspector published a report in summer 2019 that shut down new road plans once and for all.
Back in 2016, over 3,000 Trust supporters helped us convince council planners to refuse this road building plan. However, the applicant, Peakman Ltd, appealed the council’s decision, which meant the case was in the hands of the Welsh Planning Inspectorate.
With the diligent campaigning of the local community and support from Torfaen County Borough Council, we have collectively managed to see off this threat to precious ancient woodland outside of Pontypool, as the planning inspector dismissed the appeal with strong consideration given to the impacts on ancient woodland.
Thank you to all who have supported this campaign. We couldn’t have done it without you.
