The village attracts many visitors but this 30 ha woodland comes as a real surprise, given its proximity to the busy motorway network. Declared a local nature reserve in 2006, the Site of Biological Importance is home to a huge array of wildlife and wildflowers. There are many well maintained paths, some leading right into the wood and others linking to the Tyldesley Loopline or onwards to Beesley Green. Kempnough Brook runs through the wood and other wetland habitats include Old Warke Dam.
