An ancient woodland with panoramic views across the Weald. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest with many interesting fungus and invertebrate species finding home in the dead wood created after the Great Storm of 1987. The remains of Weardale Manor can be found in a clearing on top of the hill. The site has an interesting history of chertstone quarrying and charcoal making and the National Trust is managing it to create a varied habitat with old woodland practices such as coppicing.
