Esgair Hir

Mwyngloddfeydd Esgair Hir ac Esgair Fraith is an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) boasting an assemblage of lichens associated with metal-rich habitats (metallophyte lichens); an exceptionally rich assemblage of ferns and related plants and the rare metallophyte liverwort Cephaloziella nicholsonii (copperwort). Abandoned and unreclaimed metal mines like this site are ideal for these rare and unusual species - Mwyngloddfeydd Esgair Hir ac Esgair Fraith has the largest number of metallophyte lichens of any site in Ceredigion. The remaining site comprises of areas of semi-natural vegetation such as heath and rough grassland, along with conifer trees and saplings.
