Daisy Hill Wood is a prominent feature on the hill which rises above the city of Newry. Both hill and woodland are well-known because of their interesting origins: for 100 years the site was a world-renowned plant nursery, Daisy Hill Nursery. Daisy Hill is one of the few places in County Durham that contains a truly native Black Poplar tree. The site is adjacent to Waldridge Fell, an extensive area of lowland heath and an increasingly rare habitat. During the winter months Exmoor ponies are brought on to graze the site, and their hooves churn up the ground which gives the heather seeds a chance to get established.
