This statement sets out The Woodland Trust's actions to understand all potential modern slavery risks related to its business and to put in place steps aimed at ensuring there is no slavery or human trafficking in its own business and its supply chains for the financial year ended 31 December 2019. It covers Woodland Trust activities and those of our wholly-owned subsidiaries: Woodland Trust (Enterprises) Limited and Woodland Trust Farming Limited. 

Organisational structure 

We are the country’s largest woodland conservation charity with over 500,000 members and supporters and more than 1,000 sites, covering over 26,000 hectares, over the UK. We protect and campaign, plant trees, and restore ancient woodland for the benefit of wildlife and people. 

The organisation currently operates in the following countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The Woodland Trust uses a wide range of suppliers who support our operations, provide services and supply goods for sale. We have reviewed our business operations and relationships to identify the sectors that are high risk and are implementing proportionate control procedures across our portfolio of activity. 

Relevant policies 

The organisation operates the following policies which describe its approach to the identification of modern slavery risks and steps to be taken to prevent slavery and human trafficking in its operations. 

  • Whistleblowing policy
    The organisation encourages all its workers, customers and other business partners to report any concerns related to the direct activities, or the supply chains of, the organisation. This includes circumstances that may give rise to an enhanced risk of slavery or human trafficking. The organisation's whistleblowing procedure is designed to make it easy for workers to make disclosures, without fear of retaliation. Employees, customers or others who have any concerns can notify those concerns using our confidential email whistleblowing@woodlandtrust.org.uk
  • Safeguarding
    We have a safeguarding policy in place, and employee guidance on dealing with children and vulnerable adults. This includes advice and support on reporting concerns.
  • Procurement Policy
    The organisation is committed to ensuring its suppliers adhere to our standards of ethics. At the point of tender suppliers are required to demonstrate that they provide safe working conditions where necessary, treat workers with dignity and respect and act ethically and within the law in their use of labour. Serious violations of our ethics will lead to the termination of the business relationship.  

Staff and volunteers

The Trust has a clear framework of rules and behaviours and encourages the reporting of any concerns or breaches so that they can be dealt with appropriately in accordance with our policies and procedures. 

Our Employee Assistance Programme also provides staff with a secure way of seeking advice about any modern slavery or human trafficking issues personally affecting them or their families.

The Trust checks staff and volunteers can demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK. In addition, we use a preferred supplier list to source temporary workers and this requires all contractors and agency staff undergo an eligibility check before commencing work with us.

This statement was approved by the organisation's Board of Affairs Committee, who review it on behalf of the Board of Trustees on an annual basis.
